So what’s the best way to configure your Mobile Website with your Main Website?
For starters the mobile websites we create are a completely separate website to you main website.
What does this mean? Let’s explain,
Some types of web software allow for a more “Mobile Friendly” version of the main website to be displayed when a mobile device is detected. Although this might work ok with some websites, for the vast majority, it simply doesn’t.
This is because the habits of mobile users are typically different to desktop and laptop users.
- Mobile users are on the go.
- They want specific information.
- They want it fast and they want it to be “easy to find”.
Therefore, in most cases, you don’t want a mobile version of your main website that contains the exact same information.
So what works best for most businesses (and more importantly, your users) is a separate mobile website which is attached to a separate domain.
In other words, what most businesses need is a Mobile Website that is 100% designed for the small screens of mobile phones and the habits on Mobile Users.
That way you are assured of getting your best results.
So what does a separate Domain Name mean?
The commonest Domain choices are a .mobi domain or a sub-domain of your current website domain.
A .mobi (aka Dot Mobi) is know as a Top Level Domain or TLD. Other examples of TLDs are .com and .net etc. Dot Mobi’s were introduced for Mobile Websites and basically indicate the website is for mobile devices.
They are however, not country specific such as a .com.au so you may find that the .mobi domain that relates to your business name may in fact be in use by someone else overseas and already taken. Therefore the commonest, accepted alternative is to use a sub-domain of your domain name.
For example a sub-domain would look like this, m.yourdomainname.com.au with the “m.” being added to the beginning of your domain name. In comparison a .mobi would look like this, yourdomainname.mobi .
Whichever way you go though will depend on several considerations that are specific to you and your business. Therefore, we can advise you when you book your free consultation.
So how does a Mobile Website work in tandem with your Main Website?
It’s simple really. When your Main Website is accessed by a Mobile Device, it will detect that it’s mobile and redirect the user to the mobile version so the user gets the mobile experience.
But is it really that simple?
It can be, but we understand that not all businesses and their websites are the same and/or have the same requirements. Therefore, there can be other considerations such as whether it’s more appropriate to display your Main Website on Tablets, such as iPads etc, or to display your Mobile Website.
Another consideration is whether you want the pages within your Main Website to redirect to their equivalent page within your Mobile Website or if it’s better to divert all pages to the Mobile home page.
Once again, all these considerations can be discusses when you book your Free Consultation. Getting it right though is important because it can effect your results. This will make the difference between two websites working in harmony and complementing each other or simply being two independent websites that work sometimes but only under certain conditions.
So let’s look at a practical example of a Mobile Website!
Here’s two websites we made for a client. The one on the left is their Main Website while one the right is their Mobile Website.
For starters you can see the web design is very different for each.
The main website doesn’t fit easily onto a small screen. When you zoom out to see the whole page it is difficult to read the text, plus it’s not easy to navigate around the website either.
The Mobile Website on the left is much easier to read and navigate when the full page width is displayed. It loads quicker and the user has a much better experience.
Why not try them out on your mobile device. Here’s the addresses,
- main http://nightowllimos.com.au
- mobile http://m.nightowllimos.com.au
You’ll notice when the main web address is typed into a mobile phone it will redirect to the mobile version. Then if the user wants to, they can access the main website on their mobile phone via the link at the bottom.
